What is BEAC?

The Black Education Advisory Council is a non-partisan body which includes representatives from various constituencies that impact the education of black children within Denver.  Its mission is to assure and advocate for excellence and equity in Denver Public Schools by implementing strategies to assist in providing a quality education for black students.

The membership on this council has traditionally represented a diverse community constituency, which has included parental, educational, political, social, business, religious and other entities that influence the complete educational growth of the black child into becoming a successful and viable citizen.  The council has, therefore, initiated the recruitment of nominees from individuals and representatives of organizations to fill current openings.  Nominees must be able to serve as advocates and advisors on interests that affect black youth, their parents and the community at large of Denver Public Schools.

How many members of BEAC are there?

The membership consists of 21 voting members.  Advisors are non-voting members.

How can one become a member of BEAC?

Application for membership should be presented by letter of interest and résumé to BEAC for review, and then forwarded to the Board of Education for approval. The members of BEAC are then appointed by the Board of Education.  Members are recruited from the African American community, and consist of parents, educators and other representatives from the African American community at-large.  Individuals who are selected to serve must be residents of School District I.  (Exception: residents' requirements may be waived for individuals who serve as advisors).  Members will serve two-year terms.

When does BEAC meet?

BEAC usually meets from 4:00 until 5:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at
