Parent Trainings

Parent Workshops

We know from research and from personal experience that students who have involved parents not only go further and do better in their education, but are also more likely to be successful in life.

However, we also realize that for many schools, parental engagement is a challenge that requires the type of ongoing efforts and time most teachers and staff do not have.

With this in mind, the Denver Public School District has developed a partnership with the Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition (CSPC) and the Parent Information and Resource Center (CPIRC) to develop workshops in both Spanish and English, that schools can use when communicating with the parents of their students.  Currently, three workshops, complete with parent handouts, are available on this Web page (see below).  Feel free to use them and adjust them to meet the needs of your school or community.  Based on our availability, we are also willing to come to your school to work with teachers on preparing the workshop, or to offer support during the workshop.

It is our desire to build on these workshops and have more to offer schools.  If you use the trainings and make modifications for your school, we would love to see them and maybe make them available to other schools.  If you use the trainings as they are, we would love to hear some feedback as to how they worked for you.

Workshop 1- Introduction to the DPS Literacy Program

This workshop briefly addresses the three-hour literacy block currently in use in most DPS elementary schools. The main focus, however, is on the importance of reading. Parents will learn about the independent reading that takes place in the classroom, as well as the importance of reading at home. One chart, which is a favorite of many parents, demonstrates the correlation between minutes spent reading at home and student achievement on standardized tests. Parents will also hear about the Million Word campaign, urging them to help their children achieve this goal by not only encouraging their children to read, but by reading to them, talking to them about what they are reading, and visiting their school and public libraries.

Workshop 2- Home Learning Support

Students who are successful in school have parents who take time to work with them at home and support what they are learning in school. This workshop covers a variety of different topics to help parents support at home what their children are learning in the classroom. Parents will discuss why homework is important as well as how to make homework time a productive, learning time and how to help their children develop good study habits. Parents will also learn about the Million Word campaign and steps they can take to help their children achieve this goal.

Presenters address the topic of how parental attitudes towards learning and/or their children’s school or teacher may ultimately affect their children’s education. Participants discuss the importance of building relationships between parents and teachers, and parents and their children by being involved in school activities, as well as by having simple conversations to get to know
their children well. The presentation ends with a rhetorical question asking, "What messages are you giving your children about the importance of education?"

Workshop 3- Parent - Teacher Meetings

Any conversation between parents and teachers, whether it is a formal conference, or an impromptu meeting, can be stressful for many parents and teachers.  This workshop helps parents learn how to get the most out of these meetings and gives ideas on how to communicate effectively with teachers.

The beginning of the workshop addresses the importance of parent meetings and of maintaining communication between the home and the school.  It then breaks parent – teacher meetings down into three (3) focus areas: 1) Before the Meeting, 2) During the Meeting and, 3) After the Meeting.  Each focus area walks parents through ideas of how to prepare and what questions to ask.  The workshop also provides worksheets they can bring with them to meetings as well as a check off list for them to keep at home to help them follow up on suggestions from or discussion items with the teacher.

Because of the desire to engage parents and keep them informed, parents will also learn about the OASIS program and their ability to access their children’s test scores through their children's classroom teachers. Although the training does not go into detail about OASIS, it is important teachers know that parents might request to see their children’s records.
