Introduction

In Resolution 2320 of September 1987, the Board of Education established the American Indian Education Advisory Council.  The purpose and object is to encourage the development of a partnership between the council and the district.  The council's primary focus is to advocate for the education needs of American Indian Youth in Denver Public Schools.

Mission Statement

The mission of the American Indian Education Advisory Council is to ensure that each American Indian child in the Denver Public School District has equal access to educational opportunities and, at the same time, that the cultural uniqueness of American Indian students is clearly and fully recognized so that their special educational needs are addressed.

Goals & Objectives

  • Recognize and reflect the unique cultural and academic needs of American Indian children and develop specialized programs and activities.  This includes programs that promote the four goals of the Denver Public Schools, cultural and well-being of our American Indian families
  • Promote parental involvement in policy and decision-making
  • Establish and maintain improved communication with American Indian parents
  • Implement affirmative action guidelines that effectively recruit American Indian teachers and school administrators when and where appropriate
  • Assist in the development of educational needs assessment through consultation with community groups, parents and the Board of Education
  • Review, evaluate and develop curriculum that pertains to the presentation of American Indian people
  • Assess, evaluate and update the Focus School proposal

AIEAC Meetings

AIEAC usually meets at 5:30 p.m. on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, at the DPS Administration Building, 900 Grant Street.
