Joint Advisory Council (JAC) Ken Santiestevan
American Indian Education Advisory Council (AIEAC) Sara Howell, Chairperson The mission of the American Indian Education Advisory Council is to ensure that each American Indian child in the Denver Public School District has equal access to educational opportunities and, at the same time, that the cultural uniqueness of American Indian students is clearly and fully recognized so that their special educational needs are addressed.
Arts Resource Council Clark Strickland, Chairperson The mission of the Arts Resource Council is to advocate for funding and support from the School Board and other decision-makers to deliver a comprehensive arts education for every student.
Asian Education Advisory Council (AEAC) Keiko Kawahara, Chairperson The mission of the Asian Education Advisory Council is to ensure that every student in the Denver Public School District has equal access to quality educational opportunities; to support the diversity in culture, lifestyles and the needs of all students; and to advocate for funding of comprehensive educational programs.
Black Education Advisory Council (BEAC) Lawrence Borum, Chair
The mission of the Black Education Advisory Council is to assure excellence in education for African American students, their parents and the community, by assisting the Denver Public Schools’ Board of Education and the superintendent in understanding and addressing the issues of African Americans.
Denver Council PTSA (external site) Marisel Dorschner, President (303) 912-3013 The mission of the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is to advocate before decision makers for children's rights to better health, education and well-being; and to work closely with other national education and health agencies and organizations.
District School Improvement and Accountability Council (DSIAC) Dorolyn Griebenaw, Chairperson Accountability committees, at the district level (since 1971) and the school level (since 1988), have been required by Colorado state law and have consisted of parents, teachers, administrators, and community members to plan for school improvement and to be accountable to their communities for that improvement. The District School Improvement and Accountability Committee (District SIAC) advises the Board of Education as to the effectiveness of the local educational accountability program following review of the school improvement plans, makes recommendations to the Board of Education relative to the prioritization of expenditure of school monies, reviews charter school applications, and studies and makes recommendations on areas determined by the committee and the Board of Education. English Language Acquisition Program Districtwide Advisory Council (DAC) Contact: Flor Amaro 720 423-3653
The ELA Program Districtwide Advisory Committee is a committe called for in Chapter 11 of the 1999 U.S District Court Order - Denver Public Schools ELA Program. The Committee is reconstituted each year and includes one parent from each school where services for 20 or more English language learners are provided. Gay & Lesbian Education Advisory Council (GLEAC) R. Keith Lucero, Chairperson The Denver Public Schools Gay and Lesbian Educational Advisory Council became an official community advisory council to the Denver Public Schools Board of Education in the summer of 1999. Its primary duties are to advise the Board regarding issues of youth and staff who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, or questioning (GLBTQ); to offer support and monitor progress in protecting students from harassment; to promote and provide staff development and training to ensure compliance with the Board's non-harassment policies; and to facilitate communications between the GLBTQ community and DPS. It is actively involved in start-of-school activities to emphasize zero tolerance for disrespect or harassment of GLBTQ students, and in development of resources for training DPS staff in anti-discrimination, anti-slur, and anti-harassment strategies relative to GLBTQ students.
Gifted & Talented Advisory Council
Barbara Neyrinck, Chairperson
The mission of the Gifted & Talented Education Advisory Council is to advocate for the needs of gifted and highly gifted students; to advise the Board of Education on matters concerning the education of gifted and talented students; and to support the Gifted and Talented Education Department by making recommendations to the department and the Board of Education concerning equitable identification, curriculum, funding, and structure.
Hispanic Education Advisory Council (HEAC)
Marlene DeLa Rosa, Awards Chairperson The Hispanic Education Advisory Council serves as a liaison between Denver’s Hispanic community and the Denver Public Schools, communicating to the Board of Education and the superintendent, the educational concerns of that community and emphasizing the paramount need to improve the academic achievement of Hispanic students throughout the Denver Public School District.
Parent Empowerment Council (PEC) Marlene DeLa Rosa, Chairperson
The Parent Empowerment Council (PEC) will ensure that parents/legal guardians (including those who are economically disadvantaged, have disabilities, have limited English, are of any racial or ethnic minority background, or are parents of migratory children) are partners with teachers and school district staff in the education of their children by bringing together groups of parents/legal guardians and community members who see parent/legal guardian empowerment and involvement as essential to student academic success.
Special Education Advisory Council Pam Bisceglia, Chairperson Services are available for special education students, issues of possible discrimination considered, works with families and children with special needs.The Special Education Advisory Council was established in 1975 by a Board of Education resolution and in accordance with state and federal laws and regulations. The Council is a group composed of parents, administrators, educators and other community members. or group who may want to express concerns or propose additions or changes to the school district's plan for students with disabilities.
