VISION OF THE ARTS RESOURCE COUNCIL
A comprehensive arts education is available to all students as a tool for academic, personal and professional success.
MISSION OF THE ARTS RESOURCE COUNCIL
To advocate for funding and support from the Denver Public Schools Board of Education and other decision-makers to deliver a comprehensive arts education for every student.
GOAL 1: DEFINE A COMPREHENSIVE ARTS EDUCATION
A. Relate existing DPS and State curriculum standards to the level of practice in DPS in each discipline and each grade level 1. Identify how the context and relevance of each art form relates to larger issues of arts education and general education
B. Identify benchmarks for progress 1. Identify what assessment tools are available 2. Research the level of practice in DPS of arts assessment
C. Expand professional development opportunities for arts educators 1. Document current level of practice 2. Identify additional needs and opportunities
GOAL 2: IMPLEMENT "THE ARTS ARE BASIC" PROGRAM (AAB)
A. Maintain the focus of AAB as a discipline-based initiative
B. Identify policies that support AAB goals 1. Avoid "conversion" of arts teaching positions 2. Investigate arts graduation requirements
C. Monitor existing pilot projects 1. Develop explicit goals for the pilots 2. Identify additional resources to strengthen pilot efforts 3. Measure success of pilots in meeting goals 4. Involve pilot school principals in AAB analysis and activities
D. Emphasize teacher recruitment, training and retention
GOAL 3: ADVOCATE FOR FUNDING AND SUPPORT
A. Build support among key constituencies 1. Central administration 2. Quadrant Assistant Superintendents 3. Principals 4. Teachers 5. Collaborative Decision Making Committees 6. Parents 7. Business Committees 8. Arts organizations and businesses 9. Employers 10. Consumers of arts 11. Higher education 12. Community at-large
B. Develop clear messages to persuade constituencies 1. Utilize data collected and analyzed to buttress positions 2. Utilize "stories" to personalize arts education importance
C. Prepare and execute strategies to build support among each constituency 1. Develop, launch and maintain Web site 2. Develop regular communication by e-mail to arts educators 3. Link DPS Web site to external arts providers 4. Develop speakers bureau
GOAL 4: ENSURE THAT EXISTING ARTS EDUCATION EFFORTS ARE MAINTAINED
A. Review update of staffing patterns
B. Review facilities and other support opportunities and limitations
C. Identify existing programs within DPS
D. Identify programs and activities of outside providers
E. Identify ongoing partnerships and new opportunities 1. Arts to Career 2. Public Education and Business Coalition
F. Analyze arts education and ancillary activities in the context of AAB 1. Maintain a primary focus on provision of discipline-based arts curriculum by qualified staff 2. Encourage arts infusion and integration by training 3. Catalog and encourage arts enrichment activities 4. Catalog and encourage arts activities
GOAL 5: IDENTIFY FUNDING NEEDS AND SOURCES
A. Investigate DPS funding structure and the part that arts play 1. Maintain liaison with Budget Advisory Committee
B. Identify outside sources of funding 1. Pursue foundation funding for arts education programs 2. Research government programs that might support arts education
